“On behalf of the entire organization, I thank John for his commitment to Toronto FC and for the significant strides made for the club during his time as head coach,” MLSE President and CEO Keith Pelley said in a statement.
“John’s passion for the game and dedication is evident to all those he has worked with and we wish him and his family the best. “The organization will begin the search for Toronto FC’s next head coach immediately.”
Herdman, 49, was initially hired in August 2023 after a successful run at the helm of the Canadian men’s national team from 2018 to 2023, guiding Les Rouges to their first FIFA World Cup since 1986 while finishing on top of the Concacaf Octagonal qualification table for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Prior to his time with the Canadian women’s national team, Herdman also worked for long periods as coach of the New Zealand (2006-2011) and Canadian (2011-2018) women’s national teams.
“Personally, I have made the difficult decision that it is the right time to step away from the club as the organization defines its vision for the future,” Herdman said. “It has been an honor to wear the Toronto FC crest and contribute to the growth of the club.
“Working with this dedicated group of players and staff has been a true privilege. I want to thank Keith Pelley and the MLSE ownership for the opportunity, and I also want to thank the incredible fans for the support they have shown me both on and off the court. “I wish the organization success in the future and look forward to the next chapter in my career.”
