Atletico Ottawa has appointed Manuel Vega as its new CEO. Vega, a 33-year-old former head of business relations for Puebla FC in Mexico’s top league, succeeds Fernando Lopez. I’m curious if anyone knows whether Atletico is aiming to strengthen its relationship with Puebla FC through this hiring. As first reported by Wanderers Notebook, Atletico Ottawa has brought in Manuel Vega as the successor to Fernando Lopez as the club’s new CEO.The 33-year-old arrives to the nation’s capital after serving in Mexico’s top flight as Puebla FC’s director of corporate relations. Vega had once represented the Liga MX side through its academy system before transitioning off the pitch at the age of 25. With Puebla, he was previously the club’s Sporting Director and Director of Youth Development.“I’m eager to immerse myself in the community and work alongside our dedicated staff, players, and fans to build on the fantastic foundation laid since 2020,” says Vega, who has already been had at work behind the scenes. The new Ottleti CEO will work with Assistant General Manager JD Ulanowski and Director of Youth Development Drew Beckie. His first big order of business is to help appoint a new head coach following the departure of Carlos Gonzalez and some of his technical staff. To that end, the club will also work with parent club Atletico Madrid to find a new gaffer.“Together, we’ll continue to push the boundaries of what this club can achieve, bringing the Atlético spirit of excellence and ambition to new heights in Canada,” adds Vega. “This is an incredible opportunity, and I am committed to making Atletico Ottawa a team that both Ottawa and the global Atletico family can be proud of.”His predecessor Fernando had served as the club’s CEO and General Manager since its inception in 2020, departing this summer to join Real Zaragoza. Vega will also work with Jon Sinden on the business side of club operations, where Atletico Ottawa has certainly performed well historically.Atletico Ottawa reached the CPL Final once under Lopez in 2022, with this season seeing the club finish third overall before bowing out in the playoff semi-final stage. The club’s roster heading in to 2025 still has some big question marks, especially with star midfielder Ollie Bassett signing with the Tampa Bay Rowdies. If you liked this content, give it a like and follow us on our Frequency5fm website Copyright by Maria Ocampo.
