York United FC continued their excellent run of form at home on Saturday, defeating Halifax Wanderers FC by a score of 2-1 at York Lions Stadium, launching themselves into second place in the Canadian Premier League. For the second meeting of the year between both teams, neither coach made many changes from the previous week. Halifax coach Patrice Gheisar made just one change to his starting lineup, returning captain Andre Rampersad to the team after he recently became eligible thanks to a suspension being reduced. Meanwhile, York’s Benjamín Mora made a couple of changes: Kadin Martin-Pereux came in on the left in place of the suspended Orlando Botello, while Juan Cordóva came in in midfield in place of Brem Soumaoro. After a brief testing period during the first 15 minutes, where the Wanderers had more possession but remained patient as they tested York’s set-up, it would in fact be the home team who opened the scoring. York won a corner which Mo Babouli floated with his right foot across the six-yard box, finding a completely unmarked Marki Voytsekhovskyy who was able to head home a well-placed header. However, Halifax kept pressing and, on the half-hour mark, they still had a whopping 83 per cent possession. The closest they came to scoring in that stretch was a Rampersad shot from the top of the box, where he had done well to make space for himself, but CPL Goalkeeper of the Month Thomas Vincensini was able to dive and push the ball away.Dan Nimick created a chance of his own just seconds before half-time, dancing across the York backline to attack the goal, but his attempted shot towards the far post ended up bouncing wide thanks to the fingertips of Vincensini’s fingers. The locals came out more aggressive after the break and were soon rewarded. In the 58th minute, Voytsekhovskyy entered the penalty area and broke through, but his attempt was blocked, only to fall into the path of Cordóva. The midfielder wasted no time, rounding the ball with his foot and firing it into the top right corner from the top of the box, giving York a 2-0 lead. Both teams made some changes with around 20 minutes left, York looking to close things out while Halifax looked to at least find a goal and give themselves a chance. However, the Nine Stripes maintained their structure well, forcing the Wanderers into crosses that were easy to deal with for the most part, although Ryan Telfer caused some problems with his running from the right side. Finally, in the 87th minute, Halifax showed signs of life, as Telfer again entered the area to receive a through ball, evading his mark and sliding it across the area towards Giorgio Probo, who crashed it. the open goal (from a sliding Kadin Martin-Pereux) to make it 2-1.However, that would be all the Wanderers could muster, despite a handful of painfully close chances in added time, when they ran out of leads before finding the equaliser.Following the 2-1 victory, York improved to 5-1-1 at home this season, undefeated in its last six games at York Lions Stadium. Meanwhile, the Wanderers remain bottom of the table, unable to continue what had been a two-game winning streak.Well at the moment we are in position 2 On the position tableLet’s hope to win the next game.Report by Maria Ocampo rights reserved Remember to follow us on our Frequency5fm website.
