A familiar face returns to lead the Toronto FC team Today, Toronto FC named former assistant coach Robin Fraser as the 15th head coach in club history, signing the new coach to a contract that will run through the 2027 MLS season.He replaces John Herdman in a position that has been vacant since November, when Fraser’s predecessor submitted his resignation amid an ongoing drone scandal during his time with the Canadian national team.Fraser had worked with Toronto FC as assistant coach to Greg Vanney for five seasons (2015-2019). During this time, TFC won the first domestic treble in MLS history, capturing the MLS Cup, Supporter’s Shield and Canadian Championship in 2017.Fraser was also part of the coaching staff that helped TFC capture three consecutive Canadian championships.Fraser was part of a very good era in Toronto FC history. (Photo courtesy: Toronto FC)The new TFC boss shares more than 30 years of professional experience as a player and coach, with more than 200 appearances in an extensive MLS career, where he was known as one of the league’s best defenders. He earned a variety of honors, ranging from two MLS Defender of the Year honors, five MLS Best XI selections, and five MLS All-Star honors.In 2020, he was even named one of the 25 greatest players in MLS history.His coaching career began as an assistant at Real Salt Lake between 2007 and 2009, where he won his first MLS Cup in his final year. In 2011 he was named head coach of Chivas USA, where he worked for two seasons before being announced as assistant coach of the New York Red Bulls in 2012, where he helped the club lift the Supporters’ Shield trophy in 2013.His final coaching stint came when he spent four years as head coach of the Colorado Rapids before being replaced by another former TFC coach, Chris Armas, after disappointing finishes in the league.Evidently, Toronto FC believes Fraser can create something for a Toronto FC squad that has been performing well below expectations given its high wage bill.“We are very excited to welcome Robin as our new head coach for the 2025 season and beyond. “Robin has one of the most successful careers in MLS, combining a multitude of experiences as a player and coach,” said Toronto FC General Manager Jason Hernandez.“As a person, he exemplifies the values of our club at the highest level and, as a coach, we are confident in his ability to achieve sporting success. “Robin’s commitment to winning has earned him trophies in both the Eastern and Western conferences and we look forward to the future work to make TFC the annual contender our owners and fans deserve.”Fraser will undoubtedly have some work to do, as the club has struggled since his departure from the coaching staff, and the franchise has not made the postseason since 2020.Let’s hope it’s a good decision for the team.
