A CAR ENTERS A SHOPPING CENTER TO STEAL
Police find a vehicle being driven by a shopping mall in Vaughan, but the suspects in the robbery remain at large.
“It’s a daring crime,” York Regional Police Sgt tells reporters.
In an unusual robbery, the suspects drove a car through the gates of the Vaughan Mills shopping center in the early morning of February 1, before breaking another pair of gates on their way out, according to police. 0:49
Police recovered a car they say was driven through a shopping center north of Toronto early Wednesday in a store robbery they are calling an “audacious crime.”
Sgt. Clint Whitney, a spokesman for the York Regional Police, said two thieves used the car to drive through a glass driveway in Vaughan Mills, near Highway 400 and Rutherford Road, around 1:10 a.m. m. Police tweeted surveillance video of the robbers in action.
Whitney said they drove the car through the mall to an electronics store, forced their way in, took a number of electronic devices, then drove through the mall again before forcing their way through a different glass entrance at the other side.
“Luckily, no one was hurt,” Whitney told reporters outside the mall. “Nevertheless, it is a bold and remarkable crime.”
The car, a stolen black 2011 Audi A4, was located Wednesday afternoon and investigators will examine it for evidence, according to police.
Her front windshield had a decal reading “Ladies on Wheels.” The vehicle has a Quebec license plate: X10 SNP
Police won’t say where the car was found.
Crime was ‘ridiculous’, ‘blatant’, police say
Police were called at 1:30 a.m. m., but the couple had fled before officers arrived. Officers found significant damage to both the mall entrances and the electronics store, Whitney added.
Investigators are trying to find out the value of the electronic devices that were stolen.
“Whether it’s ridiculous or just blatant, that’s also unacceptable,” Whitney said.
“People work in this mall. There will be cleaning staff.
There will be security personnel. We’re lucky no one was hurt, just property damage.
However, they are significant property damage and property loss.
And we take it seriously.”
Both suspects were hooded. Whitney said they could face charges including trespassing, property damage, dangerous driving and possession of stolen property.
