For the first time in Atlético Ottawa history, they defeated Forge FC at TD Place Stadium 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Before the game, Atleti had not even scored against Hamilton’s team in the country’s capital. It only took them 13 minutes on Saturday, when Manny Aparicio opened the scoring with an impressive shot from distance. Alberto Zapater scored his first CPL goal in the second half, while Rubén del Campo scored for the fifth consecutive CPL game, tying a league record set by former Caballería forward Aribim Pepple in 2022.
As a result, Atlético Ottawa remains undefeated to begin the 2024 campaign. At the time of writing, they sit six points atop the Canadian Premier League table.
Atlético Ottawa opened the scoring thanks to a good offensive play that saw the ball fall to Aboubacar Sissoko at the top of the area. The former Forge midfielder sent a short pass to Manny Aparicio, who took a touch and unleashed an absolute rocket past Chris Kalongo.
Ballou Tabla, in particular, was a constant problem for Forge during the opening moments of the match, showing off his dribbling and creativity to create a pair of shot attempts in the first 20 minutes.
Forge then had a series of chances in the 23rd minute, with Rayane Yesli making a good low save on Alexander Achinioti-Jönsson. Malik Owolabi-Belewu attempted an audacious bicycle kick on the rebound, but instead hit the face of Atleti defender Kris Twardek and received a yellow card.
As the visitors had more possession of the ball as the half progressed, Atléti looked to win it back and then quickly get behind, finding Del Campo and Tabla on a few other occasions in dangerous areas behind the Forge backline. However, neither team was able to take advantage of their advantage and the score remained 1-0 for the hosts at half-time.
Forge came flying out of the gates at the start of the second half, creating a superb chance less than two minutes after the break. Captain Kyle Bekker squared a cross for David Choinière, whose cross shot was brilliantly saved by the diving Yesli.
Aparicio had the chance to score the second in the 50th minute, when a brilliant ball from Yesli played behind him, but he opted to try and pass the ball to the other side of the area. There was no other Atleti attacker available for what would have been a touch.
After withstanding a few waves of attack from Forge, Atlético Ottawa won a free kick in the 70th minute when substitute Dani Morer was fouled to the right of the Forge area. Ollie Bassett stepped up and launched a perfect ball into the box which Zapater headed in to give Atleti a 2-0 lead. It was the Spaniard’s first league goal for Atleti, having scored a brace earlier in the season against Valor in the Canadian Championship.
The hosts broke through again just ten minutes later when a beautiful interplay between Morer and Bassett created an opening that allowed the former to make a behind-the-back pass to Del Campo. The Atlético Ottawa forward hit a cross shot and beat Kalongo to score for the fifth consecutive game.
Forge have lost consecutive games in the league and were held goalless for the second time in three league games. .
